"THE UNPLANNED SURPRISE" The Unplanned Surprise Awhile back, during a photo session with some working cowboys at a ranch, I had an opportunity to witness "The Unplanned Surprise". One of the neighboring cowboys hauled his horses to the ranch. After the first night of camping, and early the next morning, he was pleasantly surprised with a cute brown eyed foal curiously observing him. He didn't know his mare was expecting, and what a pleasant surprise it was! Bennie WoodsPainting the West in Oils and Pencil
Artist Statement
Painting the west has always held a fascination for me. Whether it's the historical west, or contemporary scenes, I capture those western scenes in my oil paintings and pencil drawings, for others to enjoy. My subject matter comes from real working cowboys and Native Americans, who so willingly share their own life experiences with me. There are stories to be told by the old Cowboy and the vanishing west. As is true with the Native American Elder, who wants the history of his people to not be forgotten. With the help of these models, I try to recreate their stories into my paintings, as if the viewer is right in the scene experiencing it, then I feel the painting is successful. I also love to paint the animals associated with the west, such as horses, cattle and buffalo. Things can get a little wild sometimes, when the models are recreating a scene. A wild west scene can turn out to be just that, wild and unexpected. I paint many hours each day in my studio, and for me, there is no better job than to capture a part of history and the western way of life for others to enjoy.
