Christi Barhaug was interested in art from an early age. During that time, she mainly used art to record and convey the grace and beauty of one of her favorite subjects: horses.

Her art teacher in high school, Dee Maddox, encouraged Christi to broaden her choices of subject matter. Consequently, Christi won several awards in high school, including a scholarship to Tulsa University.

After high school, Christi attended Stephens College and received a BA in fine art. It was at Stephens that Christi discovered her interest in drawing and painting the human figure.

In 1998, Christi moved to Wyoming to live and develop her artwork. At that time, she was introduced to the artwork of Richard Schmid. Her interest in alla prima painting was stimulated and she began to study the works of Schmid, Sargent, and Velazquez. At this time, she took workshops from Robert Grogan and E. Denny Neville. She began to work on developing her oil painting skills.

She is interested in painting many subjects now. Even though horses and people are still her favorite subjects, she also works on landscapes, and still lifes. She is also particularly interested in capturing the way light and shadows appear on subject matter that she is painting.

Christi continues to develop her skills as an artist along with directing and teaching for a grant funded elementary art program that offers art classes to almost 1000 elementary students.
