                                                            Judge n' Art
Fred D. Howard was born and raised in Provo, Utah.  He developed an interest in both law and art from his father, a successful plaintiff's lawyer and mother , an artist.  He currently serves as a full-time state trial judge serving Utah, Wasatch, Juab and Millard Counties.  Normally, presiding over a daily calendar of conflict and criminal proceedings as well as a household of nine daughters would drive a person crazy.  In Fred's case, it drove him to the art room.  As a self-taught artist, he has studied with professional artists including Doyle Shaw, David Koch, Jim Norton, Jim Wilcox, Kim English, Ken Auster, A.D. Shaw, and Scott Christiansen.  He has received awards for his artwork including a first place award for the 2006 Plein Air competition at Midway, second place award in 2006 at the largest art competition in Utah, the Springville Art Salon, Best in Show and Artist choice in 2008 at the Midway Plein Air Competition, Fourth place in 2009 at the Mid Way Plein Air Competition, Chosen as one of 200 paintings in the International Spiritual Art Show in Salt Lake City exhibited for six months in the state of the art Conference Center, third place studio painting and Merit award for his plein air painting in 2010 at the Midway Plein Air art competition.  His art is shown in the Mission Gallery, St. George, Utah, Brownstone Gallery, Highland, Utah and Window Box Gallery, Provo, Utah.  As an aspiring Plein Air artist seeking to improve his skills he regularly takes to the fields of Utah, Idaho and Wyoming in an effort to capture the essence and beauty of the western landscape.  The artist often will say, "Sometimes with a little luck I am successful and it is a captivating and thrilling experience.  But whether I am successful or not... you be the judge!"
