Joel R. Johnson was born and raised in Wyoming. He graduated from Westminster College with a B.A. in studio art and education and his Master of Fine Art in painting from Utah State University in1987.

His work has been featured in many area shows including the Colorado Governors' Show, The Rocky Mountain Watermedia Exhibition, Taos national Exhibition of Watercolors, Watercolor West Riverside Art museum California, International Watermedia XIV, and the American Watercolor Society New York City. His work is currently being shown in the Transparent Watercolor Society National Exhibition in Kenosha Wisconsin and Watercolor USA 2010 at the Springfield Art Museum Springfield Missouri. His work is represented in Colorado by Gallery East in Loveland.

He and his wife Denise reside in Vero Beach Florida where he has a studio and also teaches classes at the Vero Beach Museum of Art.
