Susan Volk Stanley grew up in Maryland and was recognized early on for her artistic talents and began selling her artwork before leaving high school. Susan attended Guilford College in North Carolina as a fine arts major but at the time her more abstract oriented instructors discouraged her realistic style and encouraged her to pursue medical illustration something she found tedious and too confining. She then broadened her major to include Visual Arts and upon graduation went into the film business working as a set designer and prop stylist for print and commercial advertising.
In the mid 80's Susan made a move west to pursue work as a set decorator, designer and art director expanding into episodic television and movie work as well as beginning a set design company geared to the Corporate Theater market. Though being a hands on designer and running a company managing large national events proved lucrative, she never lost her love for fine art and painting.
Her last film brought her to Prescott Arizona where she met artist Tom Dorr at the Phippen Art Show who told her about The Scottsdale Artists School and encouraged her to once again to find her fine art spirit. She began studying in earnest with some of today's most sought after realist painters including Matt Smith, Scott Christensen, Sherri Mc Graw, Joni Falk, Ned Jacob, Jim Norton, Daniel Keys along with many other talented instructors and painters at the school. These workshops proved invaluable leading Susan back to the place where she began, to her love of painting, and where realism is now embraced. In 2002 she sold her successful business, built an expansive art studio in Scottsdale Arizona and a place of inspiration in Prescott. These days you will find her painting full time creating memorable still life, landscape and animals in oil. She lives a western lifestyle with her husband, two children, six horses and a collection of animals large and small dividing her time between a desert ranch in Scottsdale and a hillside home in Williamson Valley outside of Prescott. Surrounded by so much beauty and inspiration it is no wonder that Susan's paintings are now sought after by both private and corporate collectors alike. Susan is regularly juried into some of the most prestigious art shows in the country and is a member of Oil painters of America, American Women Artists, American Impressionists Society, and The International Guild of Realism
