Thomas K Leston
Artwork
submitted for bid
at our September 4, 2011 auction:

"Morning at Tincup"
18"X24" , Golden Open Acrylic on Professional Gessoed Hardboard
Gallery Price: $350
Tincup is a little town in Colorado near Taylor Park in the Gunnison National Forest.
Raised in the Chicago suburbs, Thomas began his appreciation of art at
an early age, as he would frequent the museums of Chicago. Drawn to
the realistic styles of Caravaggio and his use of dramatic light.
Thomas painting is a direct result of being inspired by his Father
taking up painting after retirement. His Father would produce these
beautiful landscapes. So, Thomas picked up a brush and a few acrylics
and began to paint. That was in 1999 and in the following years he
would study the paintings that captured his attention in order to
understand what it was that produced an emotional connection between
he and the painting. For him it was the contrast of light with
darkness.
Thomas is a self-taught artist in the style of some of the early
folk-artist. He is drawn to the "Hudson River School" of early
American Art. Again because of the dramatic use of light.

"Morning at Tincup" has a personal draw since he spent a lot of time
there in the summer of 1981 where he was part of a fire crew that
lived in Taylor Park. It is best viewed in a dimly light environment
as it was painted in this condition. This was done to enhance the
affect of the early morning light. For some reason, bright rooms and
computer images don't seem to capture the subtle nature of this
painting.
He has now sold many paintings as a self-promoter in small venues such
as coffee shops, small retail stores (Blue Sky & Dragon-Flies in Estes
Park) and at times eBay. This is his third presentation at the
“Richard Schmid Fine-Art Auction” and he is excited to be a part of
this presentation.
